Jammu lacks leadership, laments Mehbooba | Fulfilling aspirations | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 16: On Wednesday, PDP president and J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti made a very significant comment in Jammu while addressing the gathering during signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Jammu Development Authority (JDA) and Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) in Jammu. She showered all praises on the people of Jammu province but regretted that Jammu lacked leadership, "Jammuites are secular, but they, unlike Kashmir, lacked leadership. Jammu didn't produce any leader who could fulfill the aspirations of the people of Jammu province. There was some dearth of leaders in Jammu, who could rightly project the demands of the people of the region at the state and national levels," she said. BJP "leader" and Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh was present on the occasion. The Chief Minister only spoke the truth. It is a fact that Jammu lacked leadership -- leadership which could highlight the issues facing the people of Jammu province and taking up the same with courage and conviction with the concerned authorities in New Delhi and J&K. Pt Prem Nath Dogra was perhaps the only leader who was respected by the people of Jammu province, and even by the Kashmiri leadership, notwithstanding the fact that he was soft-spoken and not really aggressive. His qualification was that he was committed to the Jammu cause and the national cause and he never deviated from that path. He was also easily accessible. That he was a leader in his own right could be seen from the fact that he was the first and perhaps the last leader from Jammu who could rise to become president of Bharatiya Jan Sangh. There is no doubt that the Kashmiri leadership held him in high esteem because he had the will and the capacity to take on it. After the demise of Dogra, Jammu didn't produce any leader worth his name. The national political parties, including the Congress and the Bharatiya Jan Sangh, were also responsible for creating a situation in the state that didn't allow any one from Jammu to conduct himself in the manner Dogra conducted all through his life. The people of Jammu province were consistently given by the national parties to understand that their opposition to Kashmiri leadership and Kashmiri people will alienate Kashmiri Muslims from India and would result in the separation of Kashmir from India. In fact, it was the national leadership and its flawed approach towards Kashmir that rendered the people of Jammu province weak and left the Jammu-based leaders, including those belonging to the Congress, with no other option but to dance to the tunes of their Kashmiri masters. What hampered the rise of real, genuine and effective leadership in Jammu was the fact that the central leadership had created a situation that only helped Kashmir establish its stranglehold over the state polity. Convinced that power flows from Kashmir, the small time politicians from Jammu always looked towards Kashmiri leaders and the result was that the people of Jammu lost their voice and relevance not only in the state politics but also at the national level. The story of the Jammu-based BJP leaders is no different and what the BJP did to Jammu after it got a massive mandate for the time in 2014 proves the point that it was the national leadership that never allowed Jammu leadership to assert its position and strength. |
