'Need of time is to strengthen security grid in J&K' | Lowering morale of army | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 16: Jammu and Kashmir has been in India only because of the Army. Had the Indian Army not landed in Kashmir on October 27, 1947, Pakistan would have annexed the entire Jammu and Kashmir State and the story of the country today would have been totally different. Ever since then, our soldiers have been making supreme sacrifices to retain Jammu and Kashmir for India. However, the past few years have witnessed New Delhi creating conditions which only lowered the morale of the army and paramilitary forces. It, in alliance with the Kashmiri leadership, has virtually created a situation that has led the army to believe that they are unwanted in the state in general and Kashmir province in Particular. It all started during the UPA regime under Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi. They didn't leave any stone unturned to demoralize the army and hamper security operations to please and appease Kashmiri leaders, the so-called mainstream Kashmiri leaders included, who considered the army as an occupation force and always urged New Delhi to demilitarize Kashmir so that the Kashmiri people could get "breathing space". It was hoped that the Narendra Modi Government would adopt a new approach towards the state, the army and the paramilitary forces and give then a freehand to deal with the situation in the manner they deemed fit, but it has not happened. His government is not only pursuing the same old policy, but even going beyond that with the local BJP ministers making common cause with the anti-army elements in Kashmir and asking the Defence Minister, ManoharParrikar, to get certain strategically located army camps vacated sooner than later so that the process of demilitarization was started in the state in right earnest. Only the other day, a senior BJP minister from Jammu had a meeting with the Defence Minister and reports suggested that he pitched for vacation of certain lands in Kashmir, Jammu and Kargil, which are strategically very crucial for our forces. He urged the Defence Minister to order the army to vacate Tatoo Ground, Srinagar, and High Grounds in Anantnag, area adjoining Jammu University and that peace of land in Kargil, which the army had been using for years for the defence of the country. The Defence Minister reportedly told the Jammu-based BJP Minister that he would consider the demand positively and talk to the army commanders in the state to do the needful. All this has alarmed the top army commanders in the state, with some of them bemoaning that New Delhi instead of strengthening the security grid in the separatist and militant-infested state is "only weakening it". "Kashmir will go out of India in case New Delhi didn't review its existing approach towards the army, CRPF and BSF," said one top army commander on the condition of anonymity. Sources have also revealed that "the army commanders in the state are unhappy with New Delhi and the manner it has been handling Kashmir" and that "there are elements in the army in the state who don't want to fight considering the fact that they are being booked on false charges". The situation is critical. It would be only desirable and in the larger national interest if New Delhi reversed its Kashmir policy and strengthen the security grid in the state considering the fact that Pakistan and its agents in Kashmir have heightened their break-India activities. |
