Jammu, June 16: Incredible it may sound but it is true that as many as 121 Non Gazetted/ Class IV employees are in possession of 3 room type government accommodation in the state . Jammu tops in this 'irregularity' where 94 such residential units meant for gazetted officials are occupied by non gazetted or class IV employees as against Srinagar where 27 such flats are in possession of the latter category of employees- all by dint of their clout and influence in the political corridors which fetch them this favour with ease.
Shockingly, there are 27 officers of the gazetted rank working in various departments who live in one room set type accommodation even as their entitlement is for 3 room type sets- all because they do not have anyone to recommend, not to speak of getting this rightful due on their own. This information came up during the ongoing session of legislature in response to a query seeking to know as to who are in possession of 3 room type residential accommodation in both the state capitals. Of the 27 gazetted officials ironically living in single room accommodation, 24 such cases are in Srinagar and 3 in Jammu.
This small data only amply reflects the whole story of accommodation blues faced by the employees in general. This is all about the game of influence, sycophancy and clout in the political as well as administrative circles by dint of which lower rank employees outsmart their seniors in grabbing their choicest accommodation in both the state capitals at choicest places and furnished with choicest structures in terms of furniture as well as the furnishings, said an employee of gazetted rank. It all depends how good your relations are with the store keeper, he said, adding that the stuff one gets also depends on whims and wishes of the latter who is all powerful in giving furniture and allied structures in the government accommodation.
One more aspect of despair in the accommodation allotment is that even after the officials manage it after strongest recommendations from ministers and bureaucrats, he is made to suffer and wait for months to get the furniture for the residential unit. One of the reasons for storekeepers to feel pricy is that they most sought after by mantries and babus alike in upkeep of their residential bunglows where expenditure on renovation and repair works runs into crores of rupees every year. |
