Flood-hit areas await compensation | | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report Srinagar, June 16: As the disastrous flood of 2014 damaged worth millions of rupees, it also damaged ready to reap crops and washed away fertile land worth crores of rupees at different parts of Kashmir. However people from these areas expressing shock over getting ignored in relief packages of government told Early Times that they are yet to receive any kind of compensation from state government. Farmers said the government altogether ignored them after assuming power. "We had high hopes that the government may address our genuine demands and would at least announce relief package for flood hit people in its strong bastions during their rule but like other political parties they only deceived us despite the fact that we people gave them an identity by voting them to power time and again." Farooq Ahmad of Anantnag said. As per official details available with Early Times, loss to crops and fruits which include Apple Orchards, Paddy, Maize fields and vegetable gardens in 10 districts of Kashmir besides Leh district of Ladakh division, around 38000 hectares of land was either completely washed away or damaged by floods of September 2014. The details reveal that out of 3 Lakh Hectares of crop area in Kashmir division, around 1.35 Lakh Hectares were also damaged by flood, while as 1.65 Lakh Hectares were severely affected due to incessant rains, drop in temperature and diseases to different crops, vegetables and fruits then. During floods, in terms of loss to Productions, official details reveal that it was then assessed at 8,54,213 MT in respect of Cereals, 5,08,492 MT in respect of Vegetables, 14,02,472 MT of Fodder , 1773 MT of Pulses and 11 MT of Saffron and the overall loss was estimated as Rs 3675 Crore. Immediately after floods, authorities had then formulated an assistance plan of Rs 64.17 Crore for farmers to assist the farmers in Kashmir. However according to Farmers and Orchardists who suffered massive loss during floods of 2014; they are yet to receive any kind of financial assistance from people at the helm of affairs. Foods of September 2014 also washed away soil and Pesticide testing labs of Lal Mandi Srinagar which according to sources are yet to be constructed, thereby adding worries for Orchardists and Farmers who need soil testing labs and for the department itself which needs Pesticide labs to test pesticides supplied from other states of the country to Jammu and Kashmir. "Even Governor NN Vohra in his relief package announced on February 6 this year made no mention of flood hit farmers. As if nothing had happened or whatever happened with farmers is not an eye opener for government."Yahya Hussain of Pulwama said. |
