Motorable Androla bridge still in 'doldrums' | | | Early Times Report
Rajouri, June 16: Despite allotment of work about 4 months ago about motorable bridge at village Androla (Potha) and several notices served to concerned contractor, the said person has failed to initiate the construction work of motor able bridge at village Androla (Potha) in Rajouri district. "The contractor/ owner of M/S Mir Son's company (Kashmir) though had promised to begin the construction work in the month of January but he didn't turn up and the department has been planning to terminate the contract at his cost" said a senior officer of PWD (R&B) Division. If recalled here the problems compounded for locals in areas in the first week of September 2014 when the suspension bridge (Foot bridge)) at Androla (Near Potha) was washed away in the flash floods followed by torrential rains and landslides. As the bridge was connecting more than 30000 populations on both sides of the bridge and was also connecting Rajouri-Kalakot-Jammu and Rajouri-Nowshera-Jammu (highway) roads, the state government decided to convert it for the use of light vehicles including four wheelers. Accordingly e-tenders were called and in May 2015 Kashmir based contractor Farooq Mir was awarded construction work with a cost of Rs 5.50 crores but till today the contractor has failed to execute the construction work for the reasons best known to him. "Inhabitants of Androla, Potha, Kallar, Bathooni and adjoining areas especially employees and students on both side of the Rajouri river have been facing many difficulties for their routine works and the department as well as contractor seems not to be bothered about our problems" said Narinder Kumar hailing from Androla. Mohd Nasasr , Arun Singh , Mukhtiar Ahmed and others also alleged that people from both the sides of the river have to take a round of about 16 kilometers to reach at Potha after crossing another bridge at Muradpur as this vital bridge was a life line for the inhabitant of the areas as hundreds of students, locals, employees, teachers and others were using this bridge for their daily routine activities. Locals alleged that despite e-Tendering worth Rs 5.50 Crores called by state authorities, the tender was allotted to Kashmir based firm M/s Mir Son's after being cleared by the Contract Committee and Chief Engineer. Meanwhile despite final notice served to the contractor in the month of December, the said contractor has utterly failed to begin the construction work till today. Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) PWD (R&B) Rajouri said that construction of link roads on both sides of the bridge to connect Jammu-Poonch highway and Rajouri-Kalakot-Jammu road was also included in the contract for the construction of bridge. He added that some land owners have approached the Tribunal Court for land compensation (for link road) and the matter has to be decided yet which is delaying the beginning of the construction of this bridge. |
