Lack of irrigation facility adds to farmers' plight, Irrigation officials go absent on office | | | Arun Trisal Early Times Report Kathua, July 04: Farmers blamed poor irrigation facility, irregular supply of power and non-availability of crop loan for leaving thousands of hectares agricultural land to go dry during peak period of cultivation in entire District Kathua while irrigation officials have been absent from office even during official hours. Locals lamented that dozens of deputations comprised farmers and members of farmers' organizations today went to Office of Executive Engineer Irrigation Kathua and found X En, AEE and other officials absent at 11:00am and waited for almost two hours though there was no official holiday which further triggered resentment among locals. Here it needs to mention that all tributaries forming major irrigation network have gone dry during cultivation of paddy crop which further is being feared to affect economy and availability of rice/ paddy in months to come. Farming community recalled that Minister of Irrigation Sham Lal Choudhary, during his last meeting with local farmers had promised to provide water at appropriate period but his promises seemed to deflated now when thinsg on ground reality are completely contrary. Mohinder Singh member Kissan Tarik Organisation alleged that the unavailability of water supply in tributaries is result of negligent attitude of the officials who failed to provide irrigation supply during peak period of cultivation that would not be tolerate any more. He said number of deputation frequently called on Er Ved Raj Gupta, X EN irrigation Division Kathua but the said officer always was found absent from his office in an unauthorized manner as there was no entry in movement register. Singh appealed Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Irrigation Minister and DDC Kathua to make check on punctuality of the officials and sufferings of the farmers due to unavailability of water supply. The Kissan Tarik organisation demanded stringent action against passive officers and water supply in tributaries that would bring respite for farmers. When contacted one PHE Official preferring not to be quoted said who accepted the unavailability of officers and water supply in tributaries. |
