Mehbooba Mufti orders review cases of youth booked under stone pelting charges | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 4: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on July 4 ordered review of the cases of youth booked under stone pelting charges during the period of Omar Abdullah-led government. Mehbooba in a meeting with senior civil and police officials asked them to review the cases registered against youth between 2008 and 2014. National Conference and Congress were in the power in J-K during the period. "The Home Department and the Police should expedite the process of taking a holistic review of the cases registered against the youth between 2008 and 2014 for stone-pelting and decide on merits how many of such cases can be withdrawn to give these young boys an opportunity to begin their lives afresh and live as productive citizens," Mehbooba said. A government spokesperson said the Chief Minister has sought a report about nine youth serving imprisonment in stone pelting cases. During the meeting, Mehbooba asked the Director General of Police to take up the matter of deportation of a physically and mentally challenged Pakistani prisoner. The Pakistani national is serving imprisonment in a State jail for accidentally crossing the Line of Control. "Why has been the person kept in jail for so long, when he is not only deaf and dumb, but mentally deranged also," Mehbooba said. "State and its law enforcing agencies shouldn't be seen acting in such a callous manner and be more humane in their approach while dealing with cases of such physically-challenged persons." The previous NC-Congress government had been the first to announce a amnesty scheme for the youth involved in stone pelting. 1811 persons involved in 230 cases of stone pelting incidents of 2010 and 2011 had been granted amnesty under the scheme. State government last month had revealed that 799 persons of different age groups have been arrested in various incidents in Kashmir between January 2015 and January 2016 and all of them except one had been released. A government spokesperson quoting the State Director General of Prisons said 2367 persons including 2268 males and 99 females are currently lodged in various jails of the state. "These include 192 inmates involved in militancy related cases and 2170 in common law cases," the spokesperson said. |
