Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 4: The vendors at recently established Makkah Market in Lal Chowk on Monday abstained from normal business activities after police allegedly injured one of the traders for seeking permission to set up stalls on footpaths ahead of upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr. They alleged that the police without any justification beat a trader to pulp who was later taken to hospital for treatment. "We had already informed the administration that we will setup stalls for two days ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, however when we assembled at Lal Chowk this morning the concerned SHO not only made us wait for hours but also thrashed one of the trader," Bilal Ahmad a trader told 'Early Times. He identified the injured trader as Muneer Ahmad of Mehjoor Nagar who he claimed suffered fracture in leg and arm. "He (SHO) told us that he cannot allow us to setup stalls till he gets nod from his higher-ups, he made us wit for two hours that annoyed Muneer who told the him not to make them wait anymore as they have already wasted much of the time," he said adding the SHO without any second thought started kicking him and then beaten him with cane. Despite repeated attempts by this reporter no one at Kothibagh police station bothered to receive the phone. He said that the traders despite being manhandled by the police did not resort to any disorderliness and returned back to their homes without doing any sort of business that too on Eid. Ishfaq a young vendor selling trousers and t-shirts at Makkah Market said that the new address attracts less customers causing hardships to hundreds of vendors there. "We have been doing business in Lal Chowk since decade's altogether, people hardly come Makkah market for purchasing, we don't want to setup stalls for ever but for two days so that we too celebrate Eid happily," said ishfaq. Meanwhile, the traders appealed Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Dr Asgar Hussain Samoon to allow them setup stalls for two days in Lal Chowk the way they were doing business over the years. |
