S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report KUPWARA, June 4: An unidentified militant has been killed today in an ongoing gunfight at Waderballa forest area in Handwara thesil of north Kashmir's Kupwara district. A senior police official told Early Times that following specific information about the presence of some militants in Waderbala forests of Handwara thesil. A joint team of army's 21 Rashtriya Rifle (RR) and Special Operation Group (SOG) cordoned off the Waderbala forests in Rajwar area of Handwara thesil of the frontier district. The security forces intensified the cordon and search operation and fired several warning shots towards the suspected spot, where militants have taken shelter in the dense woods, the official said. The official said that the militants opened heavy volume of fire, triggering off an encounter, adding one unidentified militant has been gunned down and one weapon has also been recovered from his procession, the official said. The gunfight was going on in the area when reports last came in. However sources said that, "there is a possibility of two to three militants in the area, and they believe that they may have infiltrated from across the border. Pertinently on June 29, one unidentified militant was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Warnou forests of Lolab area in Kupwara district. |
