Locals up in arms against authorities concerned over repeated forest fires | | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report Anantnag, July 4: Inhabitants of Verinag, Kashmir, are up in arms against the authorities concerned for not taking a strong note of the repeated incidents of forest fires in the area, causing a huge damage to the state's green gold. A group of locals from Nowgam village said the officials concerned had failed to save the forests from fires. Abdul Roufsaid on June 23 last, compartment No 19 of the range caught fire which was doused after five days. On June 30, compartment No 18 of the same forest caught fire which was extinguished on July 1. On the same day, compartment No 57-B caught fire which was extinguished by rains that lashed the area soon after the breaking out of the fire. "Repeated forest fire incidents in certain compartments of Verinag forests have created doubts in the minds of the people. Why the concerned officer did not take action against its field employees who often remain absent from their duties," locals said. Official sources alleged that there was a nexus between some employees and the timber smugglers who put forests on fire to destroy the trunks of trees axed by them. They said that employees entrusted to protect the forests hadn't been transferred for the last over 20 years and urged concerned minister to take a strong action against the employees and officers responsible for the damage. Repeated attempts failed to contact DFO, Anantnag. |
