KISHTWAR, July 17: District hospital Kishtwar catering to heavy rush of patients not only from Kishtwar but also from adjoining Doda District as well as from neighboring Himachal Pradesh is struck by non availability of gynecologist in the hospital as government recently transferred one gynecologist identified by the sources as Dr. Shafiqa Qazi to Bhaderwah while another gynecologist Dr. Shabnum Laila was on leave as a result of which many delivery (child birth) cases reaching Kishtwar hospital had to be referred causing inconvenience to the patients and the attendants.
While talking to ET several patients informed that due to non availability of the gynecologist, the regular patients visiting District Hospital Kishtwar are suffering badly; adding that before sanctioning any leave to specialist doctors, the government should make alternative arrangements.
The sources said that few days ago a pregnant lady with acute labor pain with medical complications had to be shifted to District Hospital Kishtwar, but due to non availability of professional gynecologist; she suffered badly as she required immediate caesarean operation.
After hectic efforts, the lady doctor who had been transferred to Bhaderwah was available in Kishtwar; and was later approached by the family members of the patient for her help, but it was not an easy job for her to operate on her due to legal obligations.
It was after careful thought and assurances from the family members of the pregnant lady, the gynecologist agreed to help the lady doctor posted at District Hospital Kishtwar and participated in the operation as an attendant of the patient.
"She cannot operate the patient under rule-- but as a goodwill gesture, on the request of the family members; she operated on the patient after doctor on duty agreed to hold all the responsibility of the patient while at the same time the family members also assured the lady doctor that they will not go for any complaint in case any eventuality happened" said the sources. A hospital employee on the condition of anonymity while confirming the sources report said that leave is the legal right of any government doctor however the employee rued the transfer of one gynecologist. He said that hundreds of pregnancy related cases are being handled at District Hospital Kishtwar which is highest in any District Hospital after Jammu SMHS Hospital and necessitated the posting of another gynecologist in District Hospital Kishtwar.
It is pertinent to mention that more than 2.50 lakh patients visited District Hospital Kishtwar every year, but due to non availability of doctors and other paramedical staff, the patients visiting District Hospital had undergone through unnecessary harassment. The doctors posted in the Hospital also faced mental harassment due to excessive rush of patients as well as heavy rush of indoor patients. The sources informed that even though Kishtwar was accorded District status in 2008, but the staff and doctor's strength is still sanctioned as per Sub District Hospital.
