RAJOURI, July 17: With Government initiative to upgrade schools marred by politicking and vested interests, several areas in the periphery have been deprived of higher secondary schools in the vicinity, impelling the students to travel long distances to reach schools.
Higher secondary students in border villages in Nowshera tehsil have been traveling between 40-80 kilometers daily (to & fro) to reach at Nowshera town, which is the nearest higher secondary school.
"Students of 11th & 12th classes from PB, Mohra Kampla, Lam ,Pukhrni, have been covering distance between 30-80 kilometers (to & fro) daily to attend their classes either at Nowshera or at Laroka. As they reach homes late in the evening hours they have no time for their studies /tuitions at home and many times they find difficult to prepare for the examinations /school tests" said Mohd Bashir of village PB. Another villager Satnam Singh said only few passenger vehicles operate on badly damaged road between Mohra Kampla and PB and the students sometimes cover many kilometers on feet in case they miss bus service. People also complaint of acute shortage of drinking water facilities/toilets in middle schools at Loha Katha and Darooni Gala which are also not connected with roads and children after crossing a rivulet reach at this school. Inhabitants of the area have demanded higher secondary school at Lam so that their children may not suffer any more. "The matter to upgrade the Lam high school is in the notice of higher authorities and in this connection the State Government can take the decision" said CEO, Rajouri. When contacted by The Early Times, Ravinder Raina,MLA ,Nowshera Constituency said that he has already taken up the matter in the Assembly . Out of three high schools situated at Lam, Laroka & Bhawani at least one will be upgraded to higher secondary soon.
"The matter was also discussed with Naeem Akhter, Education Minister who has assured early action in this matter so that the students from these villages may not suffer any more" said MLA.
Many other schools including high and middle schools situated in this border belt also lack basic facilities like electricity, safe drinking water and road connectivity, said Inderjeet Singh ex-serviceman and added during rainy season small children crossing the seasonal rivulets to reach school by endangering their lives.
