Early Times Report

Jammu, July 16: At one hand government constitute Community Health Centers (CHCs) were designed to provide referral as well as specialist health care to the rural population but others a total of 84 CHCs in Jammu and Kashmir, out of 343 sanctioned posts of specialists' doctors 176 are still lying vacant.
Reliable sources of health department informed Early Times that in the year 2005 Jammu and Kashmir has a total of 70 CHCs in which total sanctioned posts of specialist doctors was 276 at that time 142 specialist doctors are in position but astoundingly lapse of ten years the in position strength of specialist doctors in 84 CHCs is 176 (i.e only 25 posts of specialists was filled by government in 10 years).
The Community Health Centre (CHC) to provide optimal specialized care to community and maintain an acceptable standard of quality of care but in Jammu and Kashmir these health institutions need its own care.
For 84 CHCs, government has sanctioned 84 posts of Surgeon while 41 posts are still lying vacant, 81 posts of Obstetricians & Gynecologists sanctioned in which 31 vacant, out of 108 physicians 68 are lying vacant, 36 Pediatricians posts out of 70 sanctioned posts are still lying vacant. It was clearly indicates that the vast population of state particularly in rural areas remains deprived of specialist doctors. For making available requisite manpower and other facilities rural health care institutions has not received any serious attention from those at the helm of affairs in the health department.
Due to shortage of specialist doctors in the Community Health Centres, the load of patients is continuously increasing on the already burdened District Hospitals as people are compelled to visit district headquarters to avail the services of specialist doctors, which otherwise should have been provided at their doorsteps. Even the patients are being put to grave inconvenience of travelling huge distance to reach District Hospitals.
