Kashmir remains tense as protests continue | | | Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, July 17: Protests and clashes continued to rock Kashmir for ninth consecutive day on Sunday. Reports said that army fired upon a group of youth who tried to storm an army camp at Saderkote Bala in Bandipora district. Four youth were injured in the firing and all of them were referred to Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura for treatment. Two more youth were injured today in the Anchar locality of Soura area in the summer capital. The condition of these two youth is said to be stable. Reports said that protests also broke out in some of the areas in Srinagar and other districts of Kashmir valley. However, the intensity of the protests was less as compared to the past eight days. Clashes between groups of agitating youth and police as well as security forces personnel were reported from Eidgah in Srinagar and Kunzer in Baramulla district. A police spokesman said that the overall situation throughout Kashmir valley remained calm. The spokesman said that there was no report of any untoward incident from any part of the valley. "However, stray incidents of stone pelting were received from Kunzer in Baramulla, Eidgah in Srinagar and Saderkote Bala in Bandipora. Some Policemen CRPF personnel and civilians received injuries in these incidents," said the police spokesman. In the meantime, all the districts of Kashmir valley continue to be under curfew by the state government. Strict curfew was imposed in all the areas of Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts. There are reports that all the landline phones in the North Kashmir have been snapped by the state administration. Normal life continues to remain paralyzed across Kashmir due to the enforcement of restrictions and strike call given by the separatists. Barring the post paid mobile phones of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) the mobile phones are not working in the Kashmir valley. Mobile internet services and the rail service continue to be suspended ever since the valley was rocked by protests. Separatists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik continue to be either under house arrest or detention in police station. For the second consecutive day the local newspapers failed to hit the newsstands in Kashmir valley. The state administration had on Saturday issued directions to the editors of local newspapers of the valley to stop publication of the newspapers for at least three days. Some of the printing presses were raided and subsequently sealed by police on the directions of the state government. The protests broke out after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani at Bemdoora-Kokernag in South Kashmir's Anantnag district on July 8. So far 43 persons have died in the ongoing violence. |
