Indian lawmakers disappointed nationalists
Rajya Sabha debate on Kashmir

Early Times Report
jammu, July 19: On Monday, Rajya Sabha witnessed a debate on the Kashmir situation. Lawmakers cutting across party lines spoke in one language. They were, in fact, on the other side. The Left, the NCP, the BSP, the SP and who not said almost the same thing: Alienation in Kashmir and the need to end it.
CPI-M leader Sita Ram Yechury was more vocal. He didn't really endorse the Indian view that Pakistan and Kashmiri separatists were responsible for the current turmoil in Kashmir. Nor did he hold the unruly Kashmiri mobs responsible for the same. He told the Rajya Sabha that it was the New Delhi's failure to address the Kashmiri issue that resulted in the unrest in Kashmir and there was the need to address that issue. He accused New Delhi of not giving an effect to late PM PV Rarasimha Rao's Burkina Faso "Sky is the limit" statement. He also accused the BJP of not honouring the Vajpayee's Insaniyat, Jamhooriyat and Kashmiriyat line. Besides, he charged the security forces with using excessive force on the Kashmiri protestors. He sought to create an impression as if the security forces had been entering the Kashmiris' houses to kill them. Besides, he urged the government to send an all-party delegation to Kashmir so that the lawmakers could meet the Kashmiri Muslims, listen to their stories and reassure them that New Delhi was with them and not with the security forces, (which operate only at the behest of the political establishment).
Other lawmakers also urged New Delhi to do something concrete to end Kashmiri Muslim alienation. None of them contradicted or rebutted Sita Ram, thus establishing that they were in accord with him.
Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad spoke double language. On the one hand, he accused Pakistan of creating trouble in J&K and asked Pakistan to hold itself aloof from Kashmir, and on the other, like Sita Ram, charged the state government with not preventing the security forces from using excessive force against the Kashmiri protestors. He, like Sita Ram, didn't say a word against Kashmiri separatists and others who had taken the law of the land into their own hands, challenged the institution of the state. He, in fact, lambasted both the BJP and the PDP.
It was expected that the BJP would tell the Rajya Sabha as to what was the nature of the Kashmir problem and what led to the killings of some Kashmiri hooligans and injuries to the security forces personnel and those Kashmiris who had come on to the roads to attack the security forces, destroy and burn the public properties and create a situation that would force the security forces to withdraw, but it was not to be. Neither Finance Minister Arun Jaitley nor Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke what was needed to be spoken. Of course, they blamed Pakistan but didn't refer to the nature of Kashmir problem.
The worst part was that they didn't rebut the opposition's charge that the security forces used excessive force that resulted into so many deaths. Rajnath Singh even endorsed Sita Ram's "Insaniyat and Kashmiriayt" line, thus indicating that the policy of the BJP was no different from that of the UPA.
The fact is that everyone talked about Kashmir and Kashmiri alienation and none talked about other regions of the state and other people. Indeed, what transpired in the Rajya Sabha on Monday disturbed the people across the nation in general and of J&K Kashmir, barring separatists in Kashmir, in particular.
