'Victimization' of SSP Budgam leaves police officials fuming | | | Early Times Report srinagar, July 19: Even as Senior Superintendent of Police, Budgam, Fayaz Ahmed Lone has been suddenly transferred on charges of allegedly having gagged media publications in Kashmir, his colleagues have taken serious note of the matter saying he was made a scapegoat to save collar of Government spokesman Naeem Akhter. Even as Akhter on July 16 had formally spoken to national media stating that the newspapers in Kashmir have been banned by the state government for three days, last evening the story took a twist when Chief Minister's Advisor Amitabh Mattoo told a news channel that there was no ban on publication of newspapers and anyone, who was behind the "mischief" would be taken to task. "The heads will roll," Prof Mattoo said. Though everyone was waiting that action would be initiated against the government spokesman, it was one police official who got transferred this. Talking to Early Times some senior police officials said it was unfortunate that the government was making police officials scapegoat when the cops were risking their lives to restore law and order. "Printing presses falling in the jurisdiction of the SSP Srinagar were also raided and closed by police. Why action against SSP Budgam alone," said a police official. A retired police official said cops never act against newspaper publication unless they have orders from the top most quarters. "Police is always very sensitive in venturing into newspaper offices unless ordered to do so from the highest quarters... Even as in this case it was clarified by the government spokesman that newspaper publications had been banned for three days, how can you single out a police official and victimize him. This is sheer injustice," said the police officials, asking not to be named. Despite repeated attempts government spokesman Naeem Akher could not be contacted for comments. |
