Kashmir on Edge: Qazigund woman succumbs, toll 47 | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 19: With yet another woman succumbing to her injuries at Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura here, the death toll in the firing incident at Qazigund in South Kashmir that took place on Monday evening reached three. With this the total number of persons killed in Kashmir following the outbreak of violence has reached 47. The valley has been rocked by protests since the evening of July 8 following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani during a brief encounter at Bemdoora-Kokernag in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. Reports said that Neelofar wife of Fayaz Ahmed Shah of Churat Qazigund succumbed to her injuries at SKIMS Soura in the morning today. Neelofar was rushed to SKIMS after she sustained grievous injuries after security forces opened fire on a group of people who allegedly pelted stones on them in the area. Seven other persons who sustained injuries in the incident continue to be admitted in different hospitals. It would be in place to mention here that a woman identified as Saida Begum and a youth identified as Showkat Ahmad Itoo died in the incidenton Monday evening while as Neelofar succumbed to her injuries today in the morning. A police spokesman while giving details about the incident said that an army mobile domination patrol party while moving towards Devsar tried to clear a road blockade erected by miscreants at Churat-Qazigund on Monday evening. The spokesman said that security forces party while removing the obstructions came under heavy stone pelting by miscreants from two sides. "The Army party warned the mob to maintain distance, but it did not relent. Some miscreants tried to snatch weapons from them and tried to set ablaze the vehicles. Despite repeated warnings the mob did not disperse and army fired in self defence in an effort to move out from the spot. Six persons were injured, two of whom later on succumbed to their injuries," said the police spokesman. In the meantime, the army while expressing regret over the firing incident has ordered for a probe in the incident and said that the families whose members have been killed would be given adequate compensation. "The Army deeply regrets, the unfortunate loss of life in the incident at Churat, Qaziund where the troops were forced to open fire yesterday, when a large mob turned violent resorting to heavy stone pelting and attempted to snatch weapons from the soldiers," said Colonel NN Joshi, Srinagar based defence spokesman. The defence spokesman while expressing grief over the loss of life and injuries sustained by the protesters appealed the people to maintain peace and refrain from attacking security forces or their vehicles or establishments, thus creating situations where the security forces are left with no option but to retaliate in self defence. Colonel Joshi said the army pledges to provide all possible assistance to the bereaved families and to the persons injured in the unfortunate incident. He said an inquiry has been ordered into the incident. In the meantime, the situation remained by and large normal in Kashmir valley today. Reports of stone pelting were received from some parts of the valley. Groups of youth resorted to stone pelting on police and security forces in Batmaloo, Reki Chowk, Chattabal, Bagiyas, Hyderpora, Tahab, Sangam, Fatehpora and Ahan. A police spokesman said that the situation remained under control throughout the Kashmir valley, though incidents of stray and intermittent stone pelting were reported. The spokesman said that incidents of stone pelting were reported from Tahab in Pulwama, Sangam Chowk in Bijbehara, Fatehpora and Ahan in Ganderbal and Bagiyas and Reki Chowk in Srinagar. Normal life remained paralyzed on 11th consecutive day across Kashmir due to the enforcement of restrictions and strike call given by the separatists All the districts of Kashmir continue to be under curfew or restrictions by state government. Strict curfew or restrictions were imposed in all the areas of Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts. Barring the post paid mobile phones of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) the mobile phones are not working in the Kashmir valley. Mobile internet services and the rail service continue to be suspended ever since the valley was rocked by protests. For the fourth consecutive day the local newspapers failed to hit the newsstands in Kashmir valley. The state administration had on Saturday last issued directions to the editors of local newspapers of the valley to stop publication of the newspapers. Some of the printing presses were raided and subsequently sealed by police on the directions of the state government. |
