Day 23: Kashmir tense, 5 injured in fresh clashes | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 31: As tension prevailed amidst curfew and restrictions in Kashmir on 23rd running day on Sunday, at least five persons were injured when police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel resorted to pellet firing upon a group of people who were protesting at Imam Sahib area in south Kashmir's Shopian district this afternoon. The injured were admitted at District Hospital Shopian for treatment. Reports said that groups of people mostly consisting of youth took to streets at Imam Sahib and pelted stones on police and CRPF personnel who were posted there to enforce the curfew. The protesters also resorted to stone pelting on a camp of Special Operations Group (SOG) located in the area. The police and CRPF personnel in order to bring the situation under control fired pellets towards the protesters. At least five persons sustained injuries due to the pellet firing. The injured have been identified as Nasir Ahmad, Aqib Hussain, Kifayat Hussain, Rayees Ahmad and Omais Ahmad. All the injured have sustained multiple pellet injuries and they are receiving treatment at District Hospital, Shopian. Their situation is stated to be stable. Reports of protests were received from some areas of Srinagar, Budgam and other districts of Kashmir valley. Groups of protesters clashed with police and CRPF personnel at these places and resorted to stone pelting. The security forces chased the protesters, resorted to lathi-charge and also lobbed teargas shells so as to bring the situation under control. Authorities imposed curfew in areas coming under the jurisdiction of police stations of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Safa Kadal, Maisuma and Batmaloo. Curfew was also imposed in Anantnag and Pulwama districts and Imam Sahib area of Shopian district in the South Kashmir. In the rest of the valley the life was paralyzed due to the enforcement of restrictions and strike call of the separatists. Meanwhile, a youth from Sopore who had fallen from a tree a few days ago succumbed to his injuries at Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) at Soura here on Sunday. A police spokesman said that a youth identified as Ishfaq Ahmed Dar son of Abdul Khaliq Dar, resident of Tarzoo, Sopore who had fallen from a tree succumbed to his injuries at SKIMS hospital this morning. The spokesman while quoting SP Sopore said that Ishfaq had fallen from a tree on July 23. He further said that an FIR with regard to spreading of rumours that the youth was beaten up by the security forces and then succumbed to the injuries has been lodged at Police Station Sopore. It's in place to mention here that Kashmir has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. So far 53 persons including three policemen have been killed in clashes at different places as people protested against the killing of Burhan. |
