Police tightens noose around stone throwers

SRINAGAR, July 31: Amid ongoing unrest in Kashmir, police have started registering of cases against the persons involved in stone pelting and for destroying the public and private property.
Hundreds of youths have been arrested by the police since July 9 across the Valley for their alleged involvement in stone pelting following the killing of Hizbul Mujahidin commander Burhan Wani along with two of his associates in south Kashmir's Kokernag district. During these days, more than 50 people have died while thousands have got injured. Public and private properties worth crores of rupees have been destroyed, around 150 ambulances have been damaged while the the business community and state government has suffered losses of thousands of crores.
According to the police sources "So far, more than 200 FIRs have been registered against stone pelters and persons involved in destroying public property have been booked under sections 436 and 427 RPC in various police stations of the State," he said.
Police sources said that the security agencies were busy in ascertaining the details of the damaged property during the ongoing unrest in the Valley and have completed the process. He said cases are being registered under Sections 148 (rioting), 427 (mischief), 336 (endangering life of others).
Police have registered 4400 rioting cases in Jammu and Kashmir for the last three years with 1714 cases in 2013, 1524 and 1157 in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
"Most of the rioting cases were registered when people were holding anti-India protests in the Valley and resorting to stone pelting," police sources said.
A senior police officer on condition of anonymity said "The Government is planning tough action against the miscreants involved in creating law and order problem in the valley our security agencies have identified more than 1000 youth in the last three weeks and are in process to identify others through videography and other means,".
More than hundreds have been arrested since July 9, during the nocturnal raids by the forces in various parts of the Valley and scores of youth have left their homes to evade the arrest and are on the run. He added.
During the last week, "police raided various areas of the Old Srinagar in the midnight and arrested dozens of youth on the charges of being involved in stone pelting however the locals resisted and didn't allow the police to pick up the youth triggering clashes between people and the forces," sources said.
Sources said the police have also launched a similar crackdown against youth in south Kashmir. They said police are also picking up those youth who had been part of stone pelting during the last few years and are being arrested on the suspicion of being part of street protests during the current uprising.
