SKUAST-J organizes awareness programme on rejuvenation of old/unproductive orchards

Jammu, Aug 8: The Division of Fruit Science, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu, SKUAST-J organized one day training cum awareness programmeon today at village Chainpura, Kathua under Mission for Integrated Development in Horticulture (MIDH) project on "Training and demonstration of rejuvenation technology on old and unproductive orchards in Jammu province".
In the earlier training that was conducted in the month of Feb 2016, heading back of branches of aonla trees was done and after that due care of the aonla trees was taken to save the trees from infection.
Dr. Parshant Bakshi, Principal Investigator of the project highlighted the importance of rejuvenation and guided the farmers about shoot selection and budding of rejuvenated shoots.
Farmers were guided different ways about how to select the shoots for budding, size of the shoot and thickness of the shoot are the different aspects that are to be taken into consideration while selection as explained by Dr. Deep ji Bhat.
The participants (HDO's, farmers and orchardists) were educated about how to select shoots for budding. The farmers/orchardists were apprised about the success story of rejuvenation by Division of Fruit Science in the mango orchards of Jammu and the same work will be taken up in aonla under this project.
Farmers were also guided how to select secondary scaffolds/branches for further growth so that a tree has an open structure. Dr Amit Jasrotia briefed the participants on the importance of cultural practices and pruning of aonla trees under Jammu subtropics. Dr. Amresh Vaid Programme coordinator KVK Kathua discussed about the various disorders and diseases of aonla and methods to overcome these so as to get good quality fruit.
Raghu Raman, SMS and Sandeep Gupta HDO responded to the queries of the orchardists/farmers ensured the farmers for every possible help needed for rejuvenation programmes.
The training programme was highly appreciated by the farmers and they requested for more such type of trainings in the near future. The other officials of university present were Preeti Choudhary (research associate), B.N Singh, Kewal Krishan and Manohar Lal.
