Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 8: The death toll in the continued Kashmir violence reached 59 after an injured youth succumbed to his injures at a hospital today. Meanwhile, normal life continues to be paralyzed across Kashmir due to the enforcement of curfew, restrictions and strike.
Reports said that 17 year old youth Aamir Bashir Lone of Sedow area in South Kashmir's Shopian district succumbed to his injuries at Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in the morning today. Aamir had been hit by pellets from a very close range on Friday last during protest demonstrations. The pellets had perforated his skull at various places and damaged his brain severely.
As soon as the news of Aamir's death reached his native area people in large numbers carried out and staged a massive protest demonstration. The protesters raised anti-government slogans and demanded exemplary punishment to the security forces personnel involved in his killing.
Reports said that at least seven civilians, including four women, were injured after the security forces fired pellets to break up a protest demonstration in the Bijbehara area of Anantnag district. Massive clashes broke out in the area after the pellet firing by the security forces. The injured were shifted to SDH Bijbehara where from two critically injured persons were referred to Srinagar.
In Srinagar clashes were reported from Lawaypora-HMT and Rainawari areas. A youth was critically injured after he was hit by a pellet in the Lawaypora during clashes. The injured youth has been referred to SKIMS Srinagar. Police lobbed tear-smoke shells to disperse the protesters during stone-pelting incidents in the Rainawari area.
Reports of reports have also been received from Sopore and Bandipora areas in North Kashmir. Groups of agitated youth clashed with security forces during the course of day and pelted stones. The same was retaliated by lathi-charge and lobbing of smoke shells by the security forces personnel. Some of the protesters sustained injuries during the clashes.
Meanwhile, authorities continued with curfew in areas coming under the jurisdiction of police stations of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Safa Kadal and Batmaloo in Srinagar district. Curfew also remained in force in Anantnag town along with Khan Saheb and Chadoora towns in Budgam district. Elsewhere, in the valley restrictions were imposed under Section 144.
The continuous strike call given by the separatists evoked full response in the Kashmir valley. All the schools, colleges, banks, private offices, commercial establishments and shops remained closed in the valley. Public transport was off the roads with only skeletal movement of private transport being witnessed. The attendance in the government offices was very thin with very few employees turning up for their duties.
A police spokesman said that except for five minor incidents of stone pelting by 'miscreants' on police deployments in Anantnag, Sopore and Bandipora Districts, overall situation in the valley remained normal and under control. Although restrictions under section 144/CrPC remained in force in the valley, curfew was imposed in some parts of Srinagar and Anantnag town only.
"A group of miscreants assembled near village Simthan on National Highway and tried to block the National Highway by placing wooden logs and obstacles to restrict the vehicular traffic movement. The miscreants also smashed the panes of some vehicles and tried to stop the vehicles/trucks carrying essential commodities. The police party headed by SHO Bijbehara visited the spot to ensure smooth vehicular movement on National Highway, following which the miscreants resorted to stone pelting upon the police/security forces due to which 12 police/security personnel were injured," said the spokesman.
The spokesman said that in order to clear the National Highway and ensure smooth flow of vehicular traffic, the Police/Security forces were compelled to use mild force, which caused injuries to eight miscreants/stone pelters. Two of them were referred to SMHS/SKIMS for further treatment and the condition of both is stable.
Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. So far 59 persons including three policemen have been killed in clashes at different places as people protested against the killing of Burhan.
