Valley unrest: Biz community manufacturing losses in crores each day | | | Early Times News SRINAGAR, Aug 8: Kashmir valley is facing heavy losses due to ongoing unrest with business community impelled to comply to complete shut down amid the stone pelting, strike and curfew in the Valley. Following protests which erupted after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant on July 8, the valley is on boil with over 55 deaths and at least 4000 people left injured in a month. July and August which usually are month of reverberating tourism, have been reduced to months of destruction, death, injury and mourning. Rarely is any tourist seen in valley while those who were staying here a month ago have rushed back to their respective places. As such tourists sensed trouble and vacated their hotels and guest houses and left Kashmir. Immediately after Burhan killing, the Srinagar International Airport was abuzz with tourist flying back to their native places. Even the Jammu and Kashmir government had gone into an overdrive to arrange additional flights to ferry tourists from Kashmir to their respective places. "We had best ever April, May and June months. We were bracing for a good summer season ahead as people from across the country and world were wishing to spend vacation here," said a tourism official. He said no tourism activity was presently going on in Kashmir. The tourists have left as situation in Kashmir turned worse. Tourism is subsequent to peace and they only visit here when they are assured about peaceful conditions in valley. With the eruption of the unrest, the travel agents from across the country had cancelled bookings for upcoming months to Kashmir. Hotels at Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Pahalgam and other destinations have been vacated by the tourists almost a month back. Those who had planned tour for upcoming months have already cancelled and the amount has been refunded to them. Unofficial figures reveal that so far over 3.5 lakh tourists had visited valley this year. It excluded over 2 lakh Amarnath yatris who visited the valley in the first 20 days of Yatra. In the backdrop of the tense situation in Kashmir, the trade along LoC continues to remain suspended from over a month now. LoC traders have shunned trade with their counterparts from the other side of the border form last one month. An official said that they had witnessed no trade activity from last three weeks or so. He said that traders from both the sides have decided to suspend trade temporarily as conditions in Kashmir turned volatile. |
