Srinagar, Aug 8: Even as the state police recently admitted that there was no change in the ground situation in Kashmir unrest since the killing of militant commander Burhan Wani, New Delhi on Monday discussed with the state government, the options of giving more powers to Army for restoration of law and order. Highly placed sources said this morning during Prime Minister, Narendra Modi during his meeting with Home Minister Rajnath Singh, apart from other things, discussed preparedness of the Army and other security forces to counter any eventuality in Kashmir. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval was also present at the meeting. Later in the day, Home Minister convened a high-level meeting in New Delhi to discuss the issue. Besides the Home Minister, the meeting was attended by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, MoS in PMO Jitendra Singh, Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, among others. Sources said the Defence Minister hinted that Army was prepared to tackle the Kashmir unrest if need arises. Today was the 31st straight day of curfew in Kashmir after protests broke out over the death of 22-year-old militant commander Burhan Wani who was killed on July 8. A month on, the Valley continues to be on the boil. While at least 56 people have died, over 6000 persons including 2000 security personnel are wounded. The Inspector General of Police, Kashmir range, Javaid Mujtaba Geelani recently candidly admitted that there was no change in the ground situation and that the forces were struggling to restore law and order. For the past few days the government has been considering handing over of the restive Valley in control of Army. A few days ago, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti held meeting with senior Army officials in the summer capital. "This all suggests the Army is likely to play a major role in restoration of law and order," said a senior official. |
