Leh, Aug 8: A young Nepali boy was killed and public property was damaged on Monday when a cloudburst hit Alchinathang Yokma and Alchinathang Gongma villages, 135 km from district headquarter Leh. The cloudburst led to flash floods which damaged irrigational canals, bridges, roads and water supply schemes in several villages in the area. The only road connectivity to Arayan valley, a famous spot in Khalsi division, got snapped due to the flash floods. Giving details, a resident of Alchinathang Gongma village, Stanzin Phunchok told The Tribune over phone that all roads had got damaged, which had hindered the traffic movement. "Water supply schemes have been damaged, which has created drinking water scarcity in the area. Besides, all irrigational canals have been damaged, which will have a negative impact during the sowing season," Phunchok said. After the cloudburst officials of public works department and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) have been pressed into service to assess the loss and restore road connectivity. Khalsi SDM Tadper Joldan said, "After cloudburst officials are on the job to ascertain the loss and bring relief to the people living in the area. Almost all departments, be it PWD, rural development or revenue, everybody is on the job to help people and asses the loss. Even the BRO has started restoring the road connectivity." |
