'Involve public to prevent land grabbing, smuggling' | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 9: The forest minister, it seems, has finally awakened to forest encroachments, if a high level meeting he chaired today is any indicator. The minister, however, must bear in mind that the official of the forest department are allegedly involved in land grabbing as well as loot of green gold. The remedial measures have to be taken at the earliest. Frisking forest officers for cigarettes and tobacco is not going to save the forests from the land grabber-smuggler-official nexus. The minister is right when he wants his officers to work with missionary zeal. The minister, himself, needs to imbibe the missionary spirit if he is genuinely concerned about the plight of forests. Transparency, the minister must know, has to percolate down from the top. If the people at top are honest and transparent, the lower rung officials will hesitate to liaise with the land grabbers and smugglers. The minister also talked of log books for the knowledge of the public and the department as well. It is a nice idea provided the book is prepared honestly and in a transparent manner. The log books also need to be checked and cross checked by the higher officials regularly. It should not be in the bin like the log books of government vehicles. And, unless the minister involves the general public in the preservation process, nothing is going to move, the rot will never end. But can the minister afford to annoy the corrupt officers by involving the public? |
