Jammu matadors choke city, cause traffic mess | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 9: Introduced in early 1980s to provide hassle free public transport on otherwise congested roads of Jammu city, which was going rapidly, the mini-buses or popularly known as 'Matadors' have become a hurdle for normal movement of vehicular traffic. No doubt, the mini-buses have sort of become a lifeline for thousands of commuters of Jammu city and its peripheries over the last more than three decades but the violation of rules and regulations by the operators has been a major cause of traffic mess in the city. The height of indiscipline of mini-bus drivers could be gauged from the fact that they halt their vehicles anywhere or anytime at their own free wish and will without even bothering for the undue hardships people undergo because of them. The mini-buses tend to often keep waiting at the earmarked or non-earmarked stops for about 10-15 minutes that too in 2 to 3 parallel rows thus causing unnecessary delay to the passengers travelling in them as well as to other commuters. The open defiance of traffic rules by mini-bus operators can easily be witnessed on several points in city. It is being often viewed that matador drivers stop their vehicles for durations beyond limits at busy junctions like Rehari Chungi, Jewel Chowk- road leading towards Tawi Bridge, Jewel Chowk near GGM Science College- road leading towards Talab Tillo, Dogra Chowk near Press Club of Jammu, Bikram Chowk, Satwari Chowk and several other parts of city thereby causing traffic commotion. Ironically, the traffic police are just a mute spectator to the unruly matador drivers who don't even give a damn on stopping their vehicles one after other in front of Director General of Police's official residence at Bikram Chowk for very long durations. Several commuters allege that due to nexus between mini-bus operators and traffic police manning the vehicular movement on city roads, there is hardly any check and balance on ever rising menace of matadors. "The mini-bus operators grease palms of traffic police officials which in turn is proving out to be a major road block to keep a tight control on rowdy matador drivers," a mini-bus passenger said. |
