Ladakhi leaders cut across political affiliations for UT status | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 9: The demand of Union Territory status to the Ladakh region has been intensified by the habitants cutting across political affiliations. District president Leh of ruling Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) Tashi Gyalson had already been expelled from the party while the opposition National Conference, served show cause notice to its district head Sonam Wangdus for signing a joint memorandum on UT status submitted to the Union Home Minister during his recent Ladakh visit. Presently, Ladakh is having BJP representative as Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Dr Sonam Dawa. ''People are still suffering the fallout of the partition and any further division of Jammu and Kashmir will only add to the problems of the state and the region as well,'' a PDP representative in Leh pleading anonymity here said. He asserted that UT status is a long-standing demand of the region, adding, ''we have to come upto the expectations of the people and not only the Congress and BJP but also the LBA have joined hands for the demand". ''However, Congress Leh president Tsering Smaphel and MLAs Nawang Rigzin Jora and Deldan Namgyal have also signed and voiced for separation from Jammu and Kashmir demanding the UT Status but Congress high command did not react over the issue. Former Congress Minister and MLA Nawang Rigzin Jora termed the decision of expulsion unjustified."Our people are united no matters which party or body they represent," Jora here told, ridiculing the PDP and NC for taking action against its leaders. "Their move has exposed them, which means they never favoured and supported UT status for Ladakh region" , Jora said. Meanwhile, PDP and NC are left unnerved as the parties are not in mood to allow their leaders to support the demand . |
