Jammu must not be taken for "granted": Gen Hasnain | Change of heart | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 9: Lt Gen (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain, who these days is writing extensively on J&K, Pakistan and internal security, was till not so long ago was known more for his bias in favour of Kashmir. While in service and Kashmir, where he served for years, and after his superannuation, Hasnain would make comments which were out-and-out Kashmir-centric. So much so, he would say that "Kashmir is a political problem that needed a political solution" - a stand which would hurt Delhi and please Kashmiri separatists and a stand for which he would be criticized and opposed. And there was a time when Hasnain was held in highest esteem for his views on Kashmir in Kashmir. However, it appears Hasnain's views on J&K have undergone a welcome change. He, of course, talks about Kashmir and Kashmiri alienation and asks New Delhi to end this alienation, but, at the same time, suggests in unambiguous terms that Jammu is also a factor, which should not be overlooked, suggesting such an approach could prove suicidal. Only on Saturday, he urged New Delhi to appreciate the needs of the people of Jammu province and said that not to do so would be to end their patience. "The durbar will move in another three weeks, hopefully bringing a tumultuous period in Kashmir's history to a close. The six-month hiatus when the seat of government will be at Jammu must be spent doing some important things. First, ensuring that Jammu receives its due attention. The Jammu populace and the BJP's street have been remarkably quiet; that should never be taken for granted, and it must be compensated by paying due attention to the needs of the region," he said. His statement "the BJP's street have been remarkably quiet; that should never be taken for granted, and it must be compensated by paying due attention to the needs of the region" needs to be underlined and taken a note of. For, it suggests many things. One, it suggests that Jammu is as important as Kashmir. Two, Jammu is unhappy and angry. Three, it has several grievances, And, last but not the least, there is the urgent need to work out a policy that addresses the concerns of the people of Jammu province on a priority basis. This is for the first time that someone putting up in Delhi and having connections at right places has made a concrete suggestion as far as the mitigation of complaints of the people of Jammu province is concerned and it should be welcomed. There is no doubt that this change of heart on the part of Hasnain will be welcomed by one and all in Jammu and why not? There are reasons for that. After all, he has taken the lead. |
