Mendhar stinks of contaminated water , PHE sleeps nonchalant | | | MS Nazki Early Times Report
Poonch, Oct 9: With crores of rupees being spent on the construction of water supply schemes in Mendhar to ensure the supply of quality water, the authorities concerned have failed to supply safe drinking water to households in Poonch courtesy the broken/damaged and worn out water supply pipes. Most of water supplying pipes of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department are allegedly old and worn out which need immediate replacement but the same is being ignored by the government for the reasons best known to them. PHE Officials on anonymity maintain that average life of PHE pipe is approximately 20-30 years while most of pipe have attained the lifetime and are to replaced. "Complaints of pipelines supplying dirty drinking water have been received from various areas," said an official of PHE without disclosing his identity. "Inability of the PHE department to replace the worn out pipes has resulted in supply of dirty water to residential areas of Mendhar town, said Mushtaq Ahmed a local of Mendhar adding, "Water is so dirty that sometimes its pungent smell detracts one who intends to drink this water.' "We pay water consuming charges for getting clean potable drinking water. However due to negligence of the PHE authorities we are forced to drink contaminated water, said majority of people. Booby khan a resident of Harni lamented that In many cases like the Harni Water Supply Scheme, water pipes have been directly immersed into the Mendhar river and its tributaries and there is no question of any filtration, bleaching or chlorination because even service reservoirs do not exist there." "Govt claims there is no paucity of funds for the purpose but even then the PHE officials have failed to supply quality water to the people, he alleged. Citing various water supply schemes lying non functional, he alleged either the authorities are incompetent or indulged in embezzlement of funds which leads to failure of the schemes. Rrameez Khan of Revenue Colony also complained that upstream locality Harni is a populated area where locals wash clothes, utensils in the rivulet/nullah feeding the water supply and further alleged PHE is supplying the same untreated water to households putting consumers' health at risk. Locals from Mendhar town have urged PHE Minister to look into the matter and take strict action against the erring official who had failed to shoulder their entrusted responsibilities. |
