Attempt to set on fire SP college foiled by employee | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 3: An alert employee foiled an abortive bid to set on fire historic S P College in the summer capital of Srinagar, official sources said here today. They said an alert employee of the college in the heart of the city noticed smoke emanating from the rare side of one of the building in the college compound last evening. However, he immediately rushed towards the area and was shocked to see one of the window of the building in flames. He immediately raised an alarm and the fire was extinguished without spreading to other parts of the building. Police have started investigation, they said. The incident took place at a time when 25 educational institutions were gutted under mysterious fire in the Kashmir valley, where schools and colleges are closed due to strike for the past more than three months due to strike, called by separatists after the death of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander Burhan Wani and two other militants in an encounter in Anantnag on July 8. However, the mysterious fire in educational institutions started after government decided to go ahead with 10th and 12th class examinations in the Kashmir valley in the middle of this month despite opposition by students. The separatists organizations besides main opposition National Conference (NC) too have opposed holding of examinations after students said they have completed about 40 per cent syllabus as educational institutions remained shut for the past three months. Jammu and Kashmir police, however, claimed that 35 accused to be involved in setting on fire educational institutions in south Kashmir have been arrested. More than 20 have been arrested while massive hunt continued against others. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted who could visit Jammu and Chandigrah as it is believed that of the accused have fled there. The separatists, spearheading the present agitation in the valley, in a latest protest calendar have declared November 7 as "School Safety Day" and asked students and parents to march towards their respective educational institutions for their safety. |
