Education Department takes Mid-Day Meal scheme casually | No nutritional status records maintained | | Arun Singh
Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 3: The insensitive attitude of the State Education Department can be gauged from the fact that it has fixed no parameters, modalities to ascertain improvement in children's nutritional status under Mid Day Meal provided in the Government schools, due to which the impact of meal on the children remain unrecorded and minimized the scope of improvement in meal. Sources told Early Times that as per the Mid Day Meal scheme guidelines, it is mandatory to keep records of the nutritional impact on children to improve the nutritional status of the primary and upper primary school children. "It is required to provide necessary intervention such as regular health check-ups, supplementation of micro-nutrients de-worming medicines, etc. but no basic indicators or specific norms to monitor the incremental improvement in health levels in the children like height and weight etc. for requirement of nutritional status of the children were set by the Department to serve as a benchmark," they informed. They further said that against the requirements under the Mid Day Meal guidelines regarding services out of MMF funds for procurement of weighing machines and height recorders, but in majority of schools of Jammu Division weighing machines and height recorders were not provided. Moreover, some schools which have these equipments had not been put to use resulting no action was taken to ascertain the improvement in nutritional status. Astoundingly, the officials of the Education Department admitted that due to absence of parameters/ modalities to ascertain improvement in children's nutritional status, the nutritional levels of children had not been ascertained, they alleged. Moreover, the programme was required to be implemented in close convergence with several other developmental programmes which included convergence with the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) for providing necessary intervention for improvement in nutritional status and health, etc. but nothing was done which shows the lackadaisical attitude of the Education Department which failed to take pro active steps in this regard, they maintained. |
