Mehbooba gets negative feedback about PDP lawmakers
'MLAs rarely visit their constituencies'
11/3/2016 11:18:59 PM
ET Report
srinagar, Nov 3: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, who is also the president of PDP, on Thursday received negative feedback about her party ministers and lawmakers from the grassroots.
Sources said prompted by inputs that some of the party leaders were unnerved by the "improper functioning of the PDP-led government due to inexperience of its lawmakers", Mehbooba had called a meeting with the zonal presidents and other party leaders.
The ministers and other lawmakers from the party were, however, kept away from the meeting, which Mehbooba hosted at her residence here.
Sources said Mehbooba had strategically kept the PDP lawmakers away from the meeting so that she gets a "direct feedback from the grassroots." But sources said the response was not satisfactory and she took serious note of the fallouts on the part of her lawmakers.
Sources said Mehbooba was shocked to know from the party cadres that her lawmakers representing various constituencies in the Valley were fast losing grip on the ground for being callous towards problems faced by their people.
"A general complaint was that these lawmakers rarely visit their constituencies, more so in the ongoing unrest, which is about to enter fifth month. The zonal and other level presidents told her that PDP was losing its sheen due to the behaviour of the lawmakers," said a source privy to the meeting.
He said Mehbooba patiently listened to all the views and told her party cadres not to shy away from making critical comments. Some of the invitees told Mehbooba that PDP ministers don't listen to the appeals of their party leaders and that they go "only by influence."
The PDP cadres told the Chief Minister that "when Kashmir was burning in the past weeks on unrest, most of the ministers remained confined to their cozy villas in Srinagar unmindful of the plight of their native areas, which they represent."
After a patient hearing, in her address Mehbooba told the PDP leaders that all their issues would be looked into on priority and that she would raise their complaints with the ministers concerned.
Mehbooba told her colleagues that unrest in Kashmir proved a major hindrance in the smooth functioning of the government and she was struggling to salvage the Valley out of the crises.
She said she would have spent these months looking for more development through funding by the Modi government in New Delhi but that the agitation in Kashmir proved a spoilsport.
She, however, was optimistic of situation getting back to normal in the coming days. "Once peace is restored, you will see an era of development and prosperity in Kashmir and all your grievances will be addressed at an earliest," she said.
The Chief Minister told the meeting that New Delhi is fully satisfied with the functioning of her government and that the coalition would complete its full term.
Sources said except for Mehbooba and party general secretary no one was present from among the senior party leaders.
