BJP takes no action against its own MLA but criticizes govt
Terming mountain a Valley

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 11: Something is patently wrong with the local BJP leadership. It is confused and adopting two approaches on the one and the same issue. The case in point is the PDP-BJP government's stand on the erstwhile Doda district, which was trifurcated into Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts during the regime of Ghulam Nabi Azad in 2007. The official handouts and the PDP ministers call the mountain region in which Ramban, Kishtwar and Doda districts are located. The official handouts and PDP ministers and NC leaders also call the mountain region of Pirpanjal as Pir Panjal Valley.
On Thursday, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti visited Kishtwar. Thereafter, two official hand outs were issued on her visit and on what she said during her visit to Kishtwar. Both the handouts repeatedly termed Kishtwar as part of the Chenab Valley, which otherwise nowhere exists.
The BJP took a strong exception to the use of this nomenclature, saying certain vested interests were deliberately using this term to divide the Jammu province on religious and ethnic lines.
"Using the term 'Chenab valley' in the official handout amounts to pursuing communal politics in Jammu and a bid to divide this region on religious lines," BJP spokesman Varinder Gupta was quoted as saying on Thursday itself. He was critical of the government of which his own party is part of the PDP-led coalition government.
Earlier, Sunil Sethi, J&K BJP chief spokesperson, had also taken the same line and said that the BJP would not allow anyone in the government or outside to play with the unity and integrity of Jammu province and that the party would take up the issue with the Chief Minister. He, in fact, issued a lengthy statement to this effect on October 20 to clarify his party's stand and this, notwithstanding the fact that the PDP-BJP agenda of alliance did term the erstwhile Doda district as Chenab Valley and Poonch-Rajouri belt as Pir Panjal Valley.
Interestingly, two days ago, BJP MLA from Doda Shakti Singh Parihar's official handout had also termed Doda as part of the Chenab Valley. It was expected that the BJP high command would take action against him, censure him and direct him not to commit such a mistake in the future. There is nothing in the public domain which could even remotely suggest that the party high command took any action against him.
How could a party criticize the PDP and the government when its own MLA has termed Doda as Chenab Valley? The BJP leadership needs to sit up and clinch the issue once and for all. After all, it is the question of the very identity of the Jammu province.
