RS Pura, the Basmati bowl of Jammu, worst hit by border clashes | | | GS Asgotra Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 11: RS Pura and its adjoining tehsils, which are basmati bowl of Jammu, are the worst sufferers of continuous Indo-Pak border skirmishes, as migrant labourers are refusing to harvest paddy crop. The basmati growers of RS Pura, Suchetgarh, Bishnah, Akhnoor and other areas are a disgruntled lot as they are finding it difficult to harvest the full grown crop of paddy, which is famous for its aroma. The indiscriminate firing and mortar shelling by Pakistani Rangers have so far claimed many lives while several others have been injured. Besides, thousands of villagers have been forced to take shelter in relief camps set up by district administration. "The indiscriminate firing from Pakistan is keeping the farmers away from their fields," a local farmer said. The area produces world famous aromatic basmati. "But the indiscriminate firing from across the border has been restricting the farmers from harvesting the crop. Moreover, the farmers depend on outside migrant labourers for harvesting. But this season labourers are not visiting the area," said a farmer Kapoor Chand of village Abdullahian near the IB. Source in the administration claimed that residents of more than 200 villages were still taking shelters in the relief camp set up in schools, community halls and temples at safer places. Since the Kargil war of 1999, these areas witnessed skirmishes, which damaged moveable and immovable property of the villagers. The successive governments have claimed to have provided five marlas plot to border villagers at safer places. "We are totally dependent on outside migrant labourers for sowing, harvesting and even selling our produce. But due to continuous skirmishes on the border, nobody has dared to visit their fields for harvesting the crops," said another farmer. |
