Govt mulls major crackdown | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Nov 11: In a bid to restore normalcy, the state government is contemplating to go for a major crackdown on miscreants who have been hell bent to keep the pot boiling in restive Kashmir. Sources said apart from plans to arrest around 3,000 more youth, the government may detain some of the civil society faces in Kashmir, where agitation is on since July 8 when militant commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani and his two colleagues were killed. Sources said the police has started discussing scope of the major crackdown in the wake of failure of the separatist-"stakeholders" meeting held on November 8, something which has dashed the hopes of softening of the protest calendar being issued by the united Hurriyat. Sources said the Chief Minister was hopeful of getting "good news" from the meeting held at the residence of senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani where Mirwaiz Umar Farooq of Hurriyat-M and JKLF chief Yasin Malik were also present. Insiders said a coterie comprising of some PDP leaders and senior officials had assured the Chief Minister that by allowing separatist leaders to hold talks with the "stakeholders", the protest program would be considerably relaxed and that within a fortnight Kashmir would be back on the track of normalcy. Interestingly, at the reopening of Darbar move offices in the winter capital on November 7, Mehboob had said she was expecting the "good news." But the results of the meeting held the next day shattered all such hopes. Sources said Mehbooba Mufti is likely to fly back to the summer capital this weekend to attend a meeting over prevalent situation in Kashmir. "Being the Home Minister, she is likely to give a go ahead for a major crackdown on the anti-national elements in the Valley," said an official, asking not to be named. As a part of this crackdown, the government has already rearrested Mirwaiz and Yasin Malik. While Malik has been shifted back to the central jail, Mirwaiz has been placed under house arrest. Over 600 youth have already been arrested. Official sources said around a fortnight back Malik and Mirwaiz were released from captivity as a part of the track-II diplomacy, which commenced with the visit of the 5-member team led by senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha. While Geelani was first to meet the visiting delegation, the government was hopeful that following talks, the separatists would call off the strike. But the joint meeting called by the separatists had a negative impact when the Hurriyat leaders announced to continue with the agitation. |
