'Tortured' by SHO, poor dishwasher forced by BJP workers to work without wages | | | Early Times Report RAJOURI, Nov 11: Life has become hell for this dishwasher hailing from Sunderbani here as the poor man is being harassed by some workers of the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) who want him to work at their homes free of cost. For Joginder Pal son of Paras Ram of Barnara, who ekes out two square meals a day by working as domestic help who cleans utensils for some families in the area, life took an ugly turn on July 22, 2016, when after day of hard work he had reached his humble cottage to have meals. "I had just started eating my meals when the door banged and police rushed in. I was even not allowed to complete my meals or wear slippers but was instantly whisked away barefooted to police station Sunderbani," the poor man recaps as tears roll down his eyes. As the news of this "arrest" had spread in the village, the area inhabitants led by Sarpanch rushed to the police station seeking his release and to inquire as to why the poor man was arrested. "The SHO told us that the accused could not be released as he was involved in a serious crime. When we sought details of his crime, the SHO threatened us to leave the place to face dire consequences," the villagers said. On the fateful night, by now the poor man behind the bars was being tortured and abused. "I was told by police why don't I work free for some BJP workers who had already been threatening me," the dishwasher added. But the poor man had told police that how would he feed his family if he works for free. On this plea he was abused further by the SHO and his team. The next morning, the locals called a journalist of Punjab Kesari who asked the police as who how come could a man be arrested without registration of case. But the police remained silent till afternoon of July 23. Finally apprehending trouble, the police released the poor man, without giving any reason for his illegal confinement and abuse. "I am unable to work properly while they (BJP leaders) keep harassing me in the name of police," the poor man said. He appealed Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and the Director General of Police to come to his rescue. "I am a poor man if I work free and forcibly at a place which is not of my choice, who will feed me and my family?" he asked. Police sources said the SHO had detained the poor man on the directions of some leaders from the ruling BJP. "Basically he (SHO) enjoys patronage of some ruling politicians that's why we are unable to initiate action against him," said a police official. |
