Div Com directs UEED to make STP at Pahalgam functional within 7 days

Anantnag, Dec 10: Waking up from deep slumber, authorities have now directed UEED to make operational the Rs. 10.58Cr Sewerage Treatment Plant functional at South Kashmir's famous tourist resort Pahalgam. Early Times, a few days ago had carried a report titled Rs. 10.58Cr worth Sewerage Treatment Plant at Pahalgam goes dysfunctional. "Divisional Commissioner Kashmir summoned the officials of UEED and representatives of Mumbai based firm 'Khalidi' that has bagged the contract of constructing the Sewerage Treatment Plant at Pahalgam and were asked to make it operational within a week," sources told Early Times. They said that Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad khan expressed deep concern over the fact that hazards sewage without any scientific treatment is directly being drained out into river Lidder. "The UEED officials were asked to explain how they allowed the firm to drain out sewage into Lidder without treatment," Sources added. Chief Executive Officer Pahalgam Development Authority, Mushtaq Ahmad Simnani, who at first highlighted the issue, confirmed to Early Times engineers from UEED and representatives of Mumbai based firm have arrived in Pahalgam and have started working to removal technical fault from STP. "They (Officials of UEED and firm representatives) have arrived in Pahalgam the previous day and have started working on it," CEO PDA said. He said that money lying with PDA will be issued to the firm for the construction of testing lab. To accesses to quality of outflow of the STP, according to sources, the firm is bound to construct a lab but surprisingly it hasn't yet constructed it.
Pertinent to mention here, 2MLD Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti May this year. With the capacity to drain out two million liters of sewerage per day, the STP has been constructed by UEED at a cost of Rs.10.58 crore, which has been fully funded by Pahalgam Development Authority out of its own resources. The Chief Minister was the told that the second and the third phases for lying of more such STPs will cater to the areas on Pahalgam outskirts.
She was informed that after commissioning the fully-automatic STP, the facility will benefit 170 hotels, 650 residential houses and 310 huts, thus paving way for operationalizing the biological disposal of sewerage at the picturesque resort.
