Top Pakistani militant killed in Sopore | 1 militant dies in army ambush in Anantnag | |  Mohammad Sarfaraz/Saahil Suhail

BARAMULLA/Anantnag, Dec 14: A top commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba was today killed in an encounter with security forces in Sopore area of north Kashmir, while as telephonic services were snapped for a day in Baramulla district. A senior police official said that on a tip of about the presence of militants in Bomai village of Sopore, the whole area was sealed off by the security forces. A joint team of army, SOG and police cordoned off the whole area and a massive search operation was launched in the area. However a militant opened fire upon the security forces which was retaliated, the official told Early Times. He said, "There was an exchange of fire from both the sides after which a foreign militant was neutralized. The slain militant was identified as Mohammad Abu Bakr of Pakistan and he was affiliated with Lashkar-e Toiba (LeT) outfit." The official said the militant was asked to surrender but he refused to do so, adding that the militant was active in Sopore town from past 8 years. "Huge arms and ammunition including one AK-47 rifle, magazines, AK-47 rounds and other war like store were recovered from the possession of slain militant," the official added. Sources said as the encounter erupted in the area, angry youth tried to march towards the encounter site but were pushed back by the heavy contingent of security forces. Meanwhile, authorities barred Internet and snapped mobile services except state run BSNL in Sopore town to prevent civilians from getting information about the encounter. Most of the civilian population was trying to get into the cordon area to give a safe passage to militant, sources added. Army kills 1 militant in Srigufwara A fierce gun battle took place between security forces and militants in the outskirts of Bevoora village of South Kashmir's Anantnag district. In the shootout, one militant was killed. Slain militant has been identified as Basit Rasool Dar. Reports said that a group of army men laid ambush in Check area of Bevoora village early Tuesday morning. A group of militants, who according sources were on way to Bevoora village were fired upon, resulting the killing of Basit. Basit, son of a JK Bank manager, had joined Hizbul Mujahideen during the current agitation in the Valley. His dead body was flown to Bijbehara police station and later handed over to his family for burial. A large number of people carried his body in a procession and raised anti-India slogans, reports said. |
