Chill intensified in Kashmir, Leh-Kargil freezes at below minus 10 degree

Srinagar, Dec 14 Chill intensified in the Kashmir valley, where minimum temperature recorded considerable drop due to open sky while Leh and Kargil continued to freeze at below minus 10 degree. A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that weather will remain dry in the Jammu and Kashmir during the next 72 hours due to which the night could become more colder though maximum temperature would be near or above normal. The world famous ski resort of Pahalgam was coldest in the valley, where business and other activities remained shut and educational institutions closed due to separatist strike. Due to recent snowfall on the upper reaches followed by dry weather and open sky, the minimum temperature recorded further drop at Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir. Against minus 4.9 degree recorded yesterday the minimum temperature there settled at minus 5.3 degree, more than two notches below normal. Due to drop in the temperature, snow on upper heights had frozen due to which water level in river Lidder and other water bodies witnessed decrease. Gulmarg, world famous ski resort in north Kashmir, however, witnessed some improvement though it was still a notch below normal. Met spokesman said after snowfall the minimum temperature at Gulmarg was minus 5.2 degree which recorded slight improvement and settled at minus 4.8 degree. Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway and health resort of Kokernag in south valley also recorded two to six degree drop in the mercury. Against yesterdays 3.2 degree, the minimum temperature dropped and settled at minus 2.8 degree at Qazigund. At Kokernag it was minus 0.8 degree against yesterdays 0.8 degree. Kupwara also witnessed two degree drop in the minimum temperature as against yesterdays minus 0.7 degree it was minus 2.7 degree. The summer capital, Srinagar also recorded drop in the minimum temperature though people woke up to a sunny morning though the intensity of heat was very low and sun was playing hide and seek. Against yesterdays minus 0.5 degree the minimum temperature dropped and settled at minus 2.7 degree. Mainly clear sky becoming partly cloudy in summer capital, Srinagar, where the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 13 degree and minus 3 degree respectively during the next 24 hours.
Leh and Kargil continued to freeze due to further drop in the mercury following clear sky during the night.
Met spokesman said the minimum temperature at Leh was minus 10.9 degree against yesterdays minus 10.6 degree while at Kargil it was minus 10.2 degree. He said the sky would be mainly clear becoming partly cloudy later at Leh, where the maximum and minimum temperature would be around 10 degree and minus 12 degree respectively during the next 24 hours.
