Two poachers arrested with 3 snow leopard hides | | | Early Times Report
Kishtwar, Apr 9 : Police claimed to have achieved a major success by arresting two poachers during a raid in KIshtwar and effecting recovery of three snow leopard hides/skins from their possession. Police sources said, "The accused have been namely Murtza Ahmed s/o Sarfraz Malik of Maliknar Chatroo and Mohammad Sharief s/o Mohammad Ramzan of Mughalmaidan.' When contacted a senior police officer said that the arrested during interrogation revealed that they got the animal hides from a hunter/poacher and were intending to sell it in the market. Police official said the arrest came after just few days when a body of snow leopard an endangered species was recovered in Chatroo of Kishtwar with bullet injury marks last week. He said that the poachers after hunting the animals particularly during winter season and then sell animal skin and other body parts through a smuggling module in national and international market. "The snow leopard is an endanger animal and its hunting is prohibited under J&K Wild Life Act, police official said while adding, "The approximate price of full skin of endangered species range between Rs 1.0 lakh to Rs 2.0 lakh and other body parts too were also sold in market for various purposes.
