Bivek Mathur Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 9: Jammu province has witnessed more custodial deaths than Kashmir division, according to the annual report of State Human Rights Commission (SHRC). Only two custodial deaths have been reported from the Valley (in Kulgam district) between April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014, while the Jammu region registered seven custodial deaths in the same period-six from Jammu district and one from Samba, says the SHRC report that was placed before the House on Thursday. Two rape cases were reported from Kashmir division while one case each was received from Jammu and Leh, the SHRC report says. Also, two murder cases were reported from Jammu's Doda and Rajouri districts. The report says that 299 cases of ex-gratia relief, rape, land disputes, harassment, disappearance, custodial deaths, murder cases, service matter, security cover, kidnappings, eviction/occupation, etc, were registered by the SHRC during the one year period in Kashmir division. Similarly, 183 cases were instituted in Jammu division, the report says. Two cases have been reported from Leh and 23 from other than Jammu and Kashmir state, taking the total number of cases instituted before the Commission to 507. Out of the 507 cases, 305 have been disposed of by the Commission in the same period while 202 cases are pending with it, the SHRC report adds. |
