Return of migrant KPs assumes centre stage after lull of one year | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Apr 9: After a lull of almost a year the rehabilitation of migrant Kashmiri Pandits has assumed importance on the political horizon of Jammu & Kashmir. This time too people with varied ideologies have reacted to the development in their own typical style. Last year in June, Prime Minister's Office had issued directions to state government headed by Omar Abdullah to indentify land for the settlement of migrant Kashmiri Pandits in the Kashmir valley. Directions were issued to the state government to identify 16,800 kanals of land in Kashmir for the establishment of 'satellite colonies' so that the migrant Kashmiri Pandits are settled there. At that time the decision drew flak from the various quarters in Kashmir. Separatist leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mohammad Yasin Malik castigated the proposed move and said the move is aimed at creating a state within the state. The criticism from the separatists ensured that there is no forward movement in this respect. Few days back the issue once again came up for discussion during the meeting between Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Home Minister, Rajnath Singh at New Delhi. The press release issued by the Press Information Bureau about the meeting virtually triggered a controversy over the issue of return of migrant Kashmiri Pandits to the valley. The press release said that Rajnath asked Mufti to provide land in the state for composite townships for Kashmiri Pandits. The Chief Minister assured the Union Home Minister that the state government will acquire and provide land at the earliest for composite townships in the valley, the press release said. However, the press release issued by Directorate of Information about the meeting between Rajnath and Mufti did not mention about the establishment of composite townships for the migrant Kashmiri Pandits in Kashmir valley. The press release while quoting the chief minister said that state government would take all steps in ensuring that Kashmiri Pandits return with dignity and honour. As soon as the press release issued by PIB hogged the headlines of newspapers in Kashmir, separatist leaders, National Conference and MLA Langate, Engineer Abdul Rashid trained guns on Mufti and his government over the issue return of migrant Kashmiri Pandits to the Kashmir valley. It was a one sided match with Mufti on one side and all the others on the opposite side of the fence. Separatist leaders like Geelani, Malik, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Syeda Asiya Andrabi and others have in fact given a call for strike on April 11 against this issue. Engineer Rashid has too chipped in and extended support to the strike call. He has in fact referred to the strike call as a referendum saying that this would prove that who is the real representative of people in Kashmir. The issue also provided some fodder to National Conference and the party leaders too did not waste the opportunity to criticize the state government on the issue. Both Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party are on the same page with regard to return of migrant Kashmiri Pandits to Kashmir valley, however, the nomenclature of settlement is different. While PDP wants migrant Kashmiri Pandits to live at their original place of living, BJP wants creation of clusters across Kashmir in this regard.
