Early Times Report
Anantnag, May 8: Municipal Council, R&B and several other departments have swung into action as an unprecedented cleanliness drive is being initiated ahead of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's visit to the town.
Surprising the locals, authorities started doing patchwork on roads that was long overdue. Besides the Municipal council Anantnag has started cleaning lanes, drains and roads of the town. They also lifted garbage from different areas where they had initially dumped it.
Locals who held several protest demonstrations against the municipal council authorities expressed dismay over the fact that the municipal authorities prioritize sanitation only on the visits of Chief Ministers.
"You are yourself witness to the fact that how municipal authorities are dumping the sewage along the roads in the town but today they surprised us by lifting the same garbage and cleaning the roads," Tariq Ahmad, a Janglatmandi resident told Early Times.
He said that fountain in the middle of Lal Chowk is dysfunctional since the day it was inaugurated but suddenly administration made it functional this evening just to please the chief minister. Locals said that the same R&B department which was reluctant to do patch work on Khanabal-Janglatmandi road, today not only did patch work but also painted pavements and dividers of the road.
Interestingly, the stretch, from Khanabal to Janglatmandi, which had been lying unrepaired for long, was repaired at the cost of Rs lakhs of rupees, revealed R7B minister.
"In hurry they painted muddy dividers," officer whishing not be named said.
Official sources said that MCA undertook a cleanliness drive, particularly in the walled areas where the CM would visit three places --Anantnag Degree College, District Hospital and Maternity and Child Care Hospital.
Administration has also repaired the dysfunctional street light during the day, Locals said.
According to official sources this will be the Chief Minister's second visit to Anantnag.
