| Sukhnandan, Ganga, Sethi refuse to use Ambassador cars | | BJP ministers demand brand new SUV vehicles | | Fazal Khan

Srinagar, May 8: Infuriated for being denied brand new bullet proof Scorpio vehicles, three BJP ministers have refused to use the Ambassador cars provided to them by the State Motor Garages.
Sources told Early Times Minister for PHE and Irrigation Sukhnandan Kumar Chaudary, Minister of Industries and Commerce Chander Prakash Ganga and Minister of State for Information, Education and Culture Priya Sethi have reportedly sent the Ambassador cars back which were allotted to them.
The PHE Minister Sukhnandan Kumar, according to the sources, was promised a bullet proof Scorpio vehicle soon after the Durbar would open in the summer capital in Srinagar. However, he was shocked when he was told by his security incharge that a bullet proof Ambassador has been provided to him.
Sources said that soon after the PHE Minister came to know that his demand has not been met, he even refused to take the security cover provided to the ministers. Kumar refusing security cover prompted the police to ask the cops in civvies to guard him. However, when Kumar realized that he was being guarded by the policemen in civvies, he (Kumar), according to sources, called the concerned Station House Officer (SHO) and asked him to arrest these people (gunmen in civvies).
A close aide of Kumar while talking to Early Times said the Minister had asked for the Bullet Proof Scorpio vehicle as a PHE Minister he has to travel to far flung areas. "He (Minister) was told that the vehicle is being arranged and it would be provided to him soon after Durbar opens in Srinagar. However, in Srinagar he was told that there are no funds and new vehicle cannot be purchased," the aide added.
Two other BJP ministers Chander Parkash Ganga and Priya Sethi also refused to use the Ambassador cars provided to them by the State Motor Garages demanding they be given the Scorpio vehicles.
An official wishing anonymity said, "We have provided the old Scorpio bullet proof vehicle to the PHE Minister and have assured him that as soon as the funds would be made available new vehicle would be arranged."
The official said that vehicles which have been provided to BJP ministers are not that old and they were being used by the ministers of the erstwhile regime. "We are arranging SUV vehicles for other two ministers also but it can take sometime," the official added.
Sources said that a few BJP ministers are not happy with the treatment being meted out to them. "Had they allotted Ambassador cars to all the ministers we would not have reacted. If PDP ministers can get bullet proof SUV vehicles why can't we be given the same," said a BJP leader.
He said, "Officials should realize that all the ministers are equal and preferences cannot be given on the basis of who belongs to which party."
Asked have SUV vehicles become status symbol for the ministers and other politicians, he said, "You should realize that everyone in Kashmir has got security concerns and there is no harm in demanding bullet proof Scorpio vehicles." |
