BJP's stoic silence on Amarnath Yatra | Exempt langar material from toll tax | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 8: Hindustan Shiv sena (HSS) and several other organizations, including religious organizations, have upped the ante against separatists in Kashmir who want the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board to limit the Amarnath pilgrimage to a maximum period of 30 days. The decision of the Shrine Board, which is based on the religious scriptures, to conduct almost 2-month-long Yatra to the Holy Shrine of Baba Amarnath is a right decision. The HSS and similar other organizations, which are eager to help the pilgrims so that their pilgrimage is a smooth and comfortable affair and less costly, have urged the Shrine Board, the PDP-BJP coalition Government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh to come forward and subsidize the annual Amarnath Yatra. It suggested that all the vehicles carrying langar material and pilgrims should be exempted from toll tax at Lakhanpur Toll Post and there should be subsidy on any sort of fuel like LPG, coal or wood being used for langar. It appears the HSS made this demand taking into consideration the fact that the Government of India subsidizes the pilgrimage to Mecca and does everything to make the pilgrimage a success, comfortable and less costly. On Thursday, the HSS bemoaned the no-action on the part of the authorities saying that their pleas, including its offer to send its volunteers to the Amarnath Shrine from 2nd June, had not been considered and yet again urged the authorities to do the needful at the earliest. There are several other organizations which play an important role during the Shri Amarnath pilgrimage. It is intriguing that the BJP, which is in the coalition government, has been maintaining a stoic silence on the issue. Till date, it has not taken any action or made any appeal to the State Governor, NN Vohra, who is ex-officio chairman of the Shrine Board, to take steps to make the impending pilgrimage a less costly affair by persuading the State Government to subsidize each and everything relating to the Yatra. On the contrary, it is playing petty games to please the Kashmiri separatists by making such ridiculous statements as "no one can snatch the AIIMS from Kashmir" and India is misusing the state land and its water at the cost of the people of J&K. it, like the Kashmiri separatists and Kashmiri parties, instead of recognizing the fact that water is a national resource and the NHPC-run power projects are national projects, asking New Delhi almost on a daily basis to return the NHPC power projects to the State Government. It is not that BJP which played an active role during the 2008 Amarnath land row. It is a different type of BJP, which is ditching its core constituency and outraging the sensitivities of the nationalist constituency across the nation by dancing to the tunes of Kashmiri separatists and Kashmiri parties. It's no wonder then that it is becoming unpopular by the day and the non-BJP parties like the NC and the Congress exploiting its unpopularity to their own advantage. The BJP needs to retrospect and act taking into account the aspirations, both political and religious, of its constituency so that it could retrieve its lost political space. |
