Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 8: In an obvious reference to party's poor showing at the polling booth level in the last General as well as Assembly polls, the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president while addressing a Congress workers' convention on May 3 last announced that the performance of the party would be reviewed at the booth level in the urban local bodies' elections.
The announcement made by the PCC chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir is nothing but an indication that the steps to review the party's performance at the polling booth level is aimed at fixing making senior leaders accountable.
Mir said that the party would count votes secured by Congress candidates from the polling booths of the senior leaders in the urban local bodies' elections.
"The upcoming elections are a litmus test for the party…We have decided to review the party's performance at the polling booth level," Mir said.
"The residences of party stalwarts Dr Karan Singh and Ghulam Nabi Azad are within Jammu Municipal Corporation limits and we will try to ensure that the party gets the maximum votes from the polling booths of such stalwarts," he added.
While referring to poor performance of some candidates at booth level in the last Assembly polls, Mir without disclosing the name of a Congress candidate pointed out that he got only nine of the 800 votes polled at the polling booth of a party stalwart in Jammu in the Assembly elections.
"We have to single out such leaders who are non-performing liabilities on the party," he said.
However, words spoken and actions taken by PCC president are quite contradictory as some of the leaders who were given key assignments in the recently reconstituted state unit have poor record of garnering good number of votes at booth level for either themselves or for a party candidate.
Sources informed Early Times that even as it is a known fact that Yogesh Sawhney, who was nominated as General Secretary PCC and Anil Chopra, who was assigned the responsibility of District President Jammu (Urban) didn't campaign for the official party candidate in the last Assembly elections, the duo was allotted key posts in the reframed body.
"Sawhney and Chopra's inactiveness during Assembly polls resulted in heavy losses to party at their respective booths in Bakshi Nagar area of the city but despite that they were given plump posts in the PCC," sources said.
Sources further said that there are a few other Congress leaders including Namrata Sharma, Choudhary Shah Mohammad, Faqir Nath and Manmohan Singh, who were made General Secretaries despite their not so good performance at their respective polling booths in Chowadhi near Sainik Colony, Bhatindi, Raipur-Domana and Shakti Nagar areas of the city during the Assembly polls.
"All these leaders could not muster enough support for the party at their respective polling booths… Moreover, some of them particularly Namrata Sharma, Faqir Nath and Manmohan Singh openly worked against official Congress candidates from Gandhi Nagar, Raipur-Domana and Jammu West assembly constituencies due to which the party feared poorly at the booth level," sources maintained.
Even the appointment of Vikram Malhotra as General Secretary, according to sources, is not justifiable as being an official party candidate from Jammu East Assembly segment, he could not get sizeable number of votes from his own polling booth in Shaheedi Chowk area of the city.
