Early Times Report

Anantnag, May 8: Municipal Committee Pahalgam (MCP) on Friday served a legal notice to hotel Paradise Inn asking the hotelier to explain why he discharged liquid waste of his hotel in Lidder against the norms and polluted the river- known for its crystal clear water.
"Yes we have served notice to the hotelier and asked him to explain His position within a week's time," Bashir Ahmad Dar, Executive Officer of Municipal committee Pahalgam told Early Times.
He said that according to norms, action will be taken against the hotelier for plundering the water body. However, hotel manager when contacted denied having received any notice from the Municipal committee.
Hotel owner, Asama Iqbal blamed authorities and said that they contacted MCP but were told that sucker machine is at fault.
"Firstly we approached Municipal Committee Pahalgam for the sucker but We were told that the machine is not working which forced us to hire sucker of Municipal Council Anantnag," She said, contradicting the Executive Officer who earlier in the day said that the hotelier didn't approach his office for the sucker.
She said that disposing off the liquid waste was the responsibility of Municipal Committee employees who were accompanying the Sucker. "We have hired a government agency so it was their responsibility to discharge it at appropriate place," she added.
Meanwhile, Assistant Director Fisheries too had taken a strong notice of the incident, "I just came to know about the incident if the people who caught the sucker driver at spot are willing to stand witness, FIR against the hotelier and employees will be lodged," AD Fisheries told Early Times.
He said that discharging liquid waste into water body was a heinous crime and has disturbed the aquatic life besides polluting the river which is the main sources of drinking water for the district.
Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Bashir Ahmad Khan too had assured action against the employees of Municipal council Anantnag and hotelier.
