Mirwaiz desperate to prove Geelani wrong, show his strength | May 21: Litmus test for PDP-BJP Govt | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 17: The PDP-BJP coalition government is all set to face yet another litmus test in coming days as the Chairman of the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has called for Eidgah chalo on May 21, to commemorate the death anniversary of his late father Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq, who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on May 21, 1990, at his Nageen residence in city out skirts here. Now it remains to be seen whether the PDP-BJP government would allow the moderate separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to show his strength and hold the proposed rally or would place him under house arrest? For Mirwaiz, May 21 this time around has assumed significance as more than ten constituents of the amalgam led by him have joined the camp of Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani. After these constituents left the amalgam Hurriyat (M) downplayed the development and described them as "one man parties and no-entities." The Hurriyat (M) spokesman Shahid-ul-Islam had claimed that the people who left the conglomerate wanted to get their monthly stipend revised. Now it remains to be seen that would Mirwaiz be able to gather the crowd minus 10 constituents or not? Besides, Mirwaiz, May 21 would also prove to be a litmus test for the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as he has already burnt his fingers by allowing Hurriyat hawk Geelani to hold rallies in Srinagar and Tral. In both these rallies Pakistan flags were waved and anti-India slogans were raised. After facing embarrassment the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who is also the Home Minister of the state had to order the police to place Geelani under house arrest. Sources said that Mirwaiz's proposed rally at Eidgah in old city has put the Chief Minister in a tight spot as he is the one who would have to take a final call on whether Mirwaiz should be allowed to take out the rally or not. "If Mufti doesn't allow Mirwaiz to hold the rally it would give credence to the reports that Mufti has got a soft corner towards Geelani and people from Geelani's camp covertly supported Peoples Democratic Party during the 2014 assembly polls, which led to the rout of National Conference in Kashmir," said an analyst. He said if Mufti allows Mirwaiz to go ahead with his programme on May 21 and if it turns out to be an anti-India show, and if some miscreants hoist the Pakistan flags it would leave the Chief Minister embarrassed. Sources told Early Times so far government has not taken any decision about Mirwaiz's May 21 rally. Neither has Mirwaiz led Hurriyat sought any permission from the government so far in this regard. The Hurriyat (M) leader Professor Abdul Gani Bhat, who had hogged the headlines for visiting the residence of the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, soon after the assembly poll results were declared in December last year, is believed to have got it conveyed to the Chief Minister that he should permit Mirwaiz to hold the Eidgah rally. Pertinently, Prof Bhat had last week organized a rally at Botengo Sopore in north Kashmir, his native place. Interestingly, no Pakistan flags were hoisted in the rally nor were any anti-India slogans raised, but Hurriyat (M) had claimed that Mirwaiz was placed under house arrest and Police didn't allow him to reach Sopore. |
