Separatists have a field day in Srinagar, admin busy with Salman Khan, Sukoon | Geelani, Mirwaiz host anti-India functions simultaneously | | Abdul Majid
Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 17: Even as many senior officials spend their weekend hanging out with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan at the hill resort of Sonamarg, where he is shooting for upcoming film Bajrangi Bhaijan, Sunday provided ample opportunity for separatists to spew anti-India venom right here in the summer capital. Senior police officials on the other hand were busy with Sukoon, a function on drug abuse. Separatist leaders from rival camps, Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who nowadays are at cut-throat competition with each other, were allowed to host parallel seminars, aimed at pro-Pakistan propaganda. Geelani's Hurriyat Conference (G) hosted daylong seminar in connection with release of his book at his Hyder Pora residence, at a stone's throw from Police Headquarter, which houses the office of Director General of Police. Mirwaiz hosted a similar event at his Raj Bagh head office. On one side Geelani and his pro-Pakistan cadres spoke their heart out against India, while on the other Mirwaiz too spoke anti government even as twin groups pledged to mobilize resources for "right to self-determination." Ironically separatists were at liberty to host anti-national functions in the summer capital exactly a day after a civilian group was disallowed to hoist the tricolor at historic Lal Chowk in the city center. Hoping to regain public support, Mirwaiz at his seminar played traditional card of communal politics again. Training his guns at the BJP, he said, the central government is "trying to change JK's Muslim identity." Geelani on the other hand reiterated his pro-Pakistan stand adding that Muslims of Jammu and Kashmir state were targeted from time to time since 1947. Stressing that right to self determination was his goal, he asked the people "support the movement". Over the past few months a heated debate is on if separatists were enjoying undue space in Kashmir while government has been insisting that curbs were in place to check any anti-national activities. But Sunday developments punctured the government claims right ahead of the proposed visit of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh who is scheduled to review security preparedness ahead of the annual Amarnathji Yatra. The separatists have already triggered a controversy that Yatra be limited to a month while statements of communal touch have heightened the tensions in this trouble-torn region in the Himalayas. But the other side of the mountain range had a different story to narrate. Witnesses said in Sonamarg officials from Tourism and other departments had hosted a special get-together with Salman Khan while many of their colleagues including those from police made it to the venue and felt previledged to take selfies with the superstar. Call it fate or coincidence when hate-speeches by separatists were on, some senior police officials were busy with Sukoon, the cultural variety show against Drug addiction held at Kashmir University. IGP Kashmir SJM Gillani who was the Chief Guest at the function said "drug menace needs a collective response to save our future generations." Other senior officials were also present on the events held at places from Sonamarg to Kashmir University while separatists had a field day! |
