POJK refugees committing mistake by pinning faith in BJP
Abolition of Custodian Dept

Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 17: Refugees from Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK) the other day asked the state government, especially the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to abolish the Evacuee and Custodian Department and initiate process of allotment of the evacuee properties to the refugee families who had been living in them for several decades. The Custodian Department, it needs to be noted, was established decades ago to take care of the properties left behind by Muslims who migrated to Pakistan in 1947 after the Partition to become Pakistani nationals. Many of these properties, particular residential houses, were allotted to Hindu and Sikh refugee families who had migrated to Jammu after the partition and in the wake of attacks on them unleashed by the protagonists of two-nation theory.
The Kashmiri leadership is against the demand seeking abolition of the Custodian Department. In fact, it wants those state subject Muslims who became Pakistani nationals in 1947-1948 to come back and reoccupy their properties in Jammu and wherever they are located. Sheikh Abdullah had even enacted a draconian Act, called Bill No. 9, for the purpose, but he could not succeed in his evil game plan, as the them State Governor, the Government of India and JKNPP defeated the NC's game plan. The Kashmiri leadership has not given up; it is just waiting for an appropriate opportunity to get the refugees from POJK ousted from the evacuee properties.
Those who urged the BJP to do the needful at the earliest to mitigate their hardships were extremely angry with the political conduct of the BJP. They accused the BJP of going back on its promise that the Custodian Department will be abolished in case it came into power. The BJP is leading the Union Government and it is also part of the J&K Government and hence, they must take steps to abolish the Custodian Department. They are pinning faith on a wrong party. The BJP cannot help them. It has become part of the state government after compromising its agenda and what it pretended it stood for. There is nothing in the agenda of alliance which could even remotely suggest that some action would be taken to weaken the Custodian Department or render it unreal. They should remember that only a few days ago the BJP top brass misled and hoodwinked the refugees from West Pakistan. They had held out a commitment that a special recruitment drive would be launched to induct them in the army and paramilitary forces, but only a couple of days ago they were barred from joining the CRPF job rally. To depend upon the BJP would be only to weaken their own cause. They should also remember that it is the same BJP which had made common cause with all the Kashmiri parties, including the ruling National Conference, to scuttle in Jammu the demand for delimitation of Assembly constituencies. The BJP had voted for anti-democratic and anti-constitutional amendment that banned delimitation of assembly constituencies for a minimum period of four decades. The POJK refugees should think of those methods which could force the authorities to do the needful. The BJP is not a dependable party.
